Understanding Upper & Lower Limits in %DV

What Does this Mean?

The Nutrition Facts label shows you the % Daily Value (%DV) for each nutrient. But what does that number actually mean for your health? Some nutrients should be limited — they have an upper limit. Others are important to get enough of — they have a lower limit.

  • You won’t see the words “upper limit” or “lower limit” on the label, but they explain how the %DV is meant to be used.

“Upper Limit” Nutrients = Eat Less Than This Amount

These are nutrients that most people get too much of — and getting too much can lead to health problems. That’s why the goal is to stay under 100% DV for the day.

Tip: If something has 30% DV for sodium, that’s 30% of your daily max in one serving.

“Lower Limit” Nutrients = Eat At Least This Amount

These nutrients help your body stay strong and healthy — and many people don’t get enough. The goal is to reach or go above 100% DV each day.
